In 1991, the Pocahontas County Historic Landmarks Commission purchased the Pocahontas County Opera House and, with support from the community, worked to transform it from an abandoned and forgotten old building into a beautiful performance space and center for community activities. They reopened its doors and brought performances to its stage once again in 1999.

The McGlaughlin house is the oldest dwelling in Marlinton, West Virginia.

A number of years ago a hand-hewn pioneer log cabin was discovered inside another residence near St. John Neumann Catholic Church, in Marlinton. Upon further inspection, members of the Pocahontas County Historic Landmarks Commission found that the cabin was built by Squire Hugh McGlaughlin in 1850 and is known as the oldest existing house in Marlinton.

The cabin was dismantled and relocated to 4th Avenue beside the Greenbrier River Trail and near the Marlinton Train Depot.
