Preserving Pocahontas News - Oct. 9, 2014

By B.J. Gudmundsson, Preservation Officer

We had a great time at Huntersville Traditions Day over the weekend where we displayed our World War II Exhibit. A lot of folks braved the cold weather and stopped by to look at the photographs. A few people brought pictures to be scanned and number of inductees were identified. Look for more names in next week's paper.

Thanks, once again, to the Traditions Day committee for their partnership with Preserving Pocahontas. We have worked with them for the past few years on various projects, always to mutual benefit.

The World War II Exhibit is on vacation from Sharp's Country Store where it has been on display throughout the summer. I hope to move it around the county for Veterans Day events. Then the photos and sketches will be placed in binders that can be loaned out to individuals over the winter. I'll keep you posted on that.

Thanks goes out to Frances Dilley who called with more names for the Hunting Party photo (PHP0001251) taken in the Dilley's Mill area. For those of you keeping track, that photo appeared in the Times on Sept. 18. And just for the record, we're not sure of the spelling on the Ervin/Ervine/Irvine name. Feel free to call me and correct it. So here we go.

Archive ID: PHP001251

Starting to the left of the poles. Back row, woman standing 3rd from the left: Birdie Fertig Ervine. Front row, 2 women seated on the ground. Left: Mildred Ervine King (Birdie's daughter). Right, dressed in plaid: Mary Dilley Anderson.

Now looking to the right of the poles. Back row, standing 2nd from right: Andy Fertig. Far right: Harmon Dilley.

Kneeling on the ground, the young man on the left leaning on the pole: Neal Kellison. 3rd from left: Cameron Dilley. Kneeling at far right: Ernest Dilley.

It's hard to keep them straight at this point, and I'm sure we'll get the rest identified. When we do I'll run the photo again with all the names.

.

Now to do a bit of important fundraising before I close out.

First, thank you to those (you know who you are) that made donations this past week. Your support is important to Preserving Pocahontas and we are grateful.

We are currently repairing and restoring data to our laptop computer. (Yes, things do break down from time to time.) We also need to purchase additional hard drives and upgrade our backup system. All of this is necessary to protect over 10,000 photos and records that are in our care. It will also make room for 4 new collections that have been donated in just this past week.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation today. Thank You!
